OPEN wants to facilitate a holistic empowerment, mentorship and learning culture in the community of East Lake neighborhood area of Chattanooga. Our vision is cross cultural. We believe beyond the exteriors. We believe that each individual is intrinsically made by their Creator, is uniquely made to be empowered to live out life fully.
How It Happens
We desire to be used as a catalyst for each individuals growth and learning, regardless of background, gender or history. This catalyst can be manifest in many forms.
Facilitation and Serving are two of our main pillars of the structure of OPEN. We believe that by offering low cost space to Chattanooga’s nonprofit agencies, whose focus is on the individuals and families of East Lake, we do not have to duplicate already fine tuned services.
Our hope is to create a “Community Empowerment Hub” that will serve as a multi-purpose community center. The Center could include the following:
- A library
- A state-of-the-art computer and technology lab
- A high quality preschool
- Office space for local entrepreneurs
- A vibrant coffee shop
- Space for an after school tutoring and enrichment program
Where It Happens
The vision for OPEN is for it to located in the former East Lake Elementary School located at 3700 13th Avenue, Chattanooga, TN in the heart of East Lake. The property consists of approximately 2.95 acres and includes buildings of approximately 58,300 square feet. The building is located next to the East Lake Elementary school.
This facility is an ideal structure for the accomplishing the vision of OPEN.
Learning Empowerment is a value we highly prize. The existence of a Children and Adult library in the East Lake community through the OPEN facility will fill the extreme void of the non-existence of a public library in the community. Through this Learning Empowerment center, holistic learning will result.
What It Creates
OPEN is an environment where individuals and families will always be welcome. Our goal is not be a ‘target’ driven facility. Our goal is to become a jewel of the community, in which that community has been empowered to build and to create among themselves a model, in which other cross cultural communities can learn and model.
The program will form partnerships with OPEN’s goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Only through intentional personal relationships can a sense of individual responsibility be established that will give youth the commitment to follow through on path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
To accomplish this goal, young people must be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect.
Over time, OPEN will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors and the community at large.
